Your Voice

Your voice

is just a void now

an unplumbed hollow

reverberating

in my mind

I can’t remember

the music of your words

were your consonants clipped?

did you glide through diphthongs?

sing your vowels?

I just don’t remember

your voice was strong

I think

not high and chirpy like a chicklet’s

full of up-speaks and likes and OMGs

uttered with weightlessness

like so much gauze bouncing

lost on the strong current

not you

I think

your voice had fullness

was anchored

or so I want to believe

your loss of speech

gradual

unfathomable

heart-breaking, in the end

it didn’t occur to me

that they would peter out, your words

come to a full stop

didn’t think to record everything

you said

we said

our songs.
